Glowing katana of the night
Teh foamsmithing board gets used! (no wai!)
Hey everyone, Leinad here, working on a new weapon. I got the idea a while back that it would be incredably kickass if we could make belegarth swords glow at night. After several probably bad ideas (one involved fiting LEDs and batterys into a werid crossgaurd), I stumbled on this: http://www.glorope.com/catalog/detail.cfm?Prod_ID=55&Cat=9 It's expensive, but if it glows good enough I personally think it would be worth it. I'm working on a new sword that will have even more and even brighter industrial strength glow paint on it when I'm done. At some point I'll buy some of the fabric and see how much is needed to make swords glow (if only a few strips are needed, then one yard couldo glowatize many swords) If this works, it would mean that we could have lightsabers and magic swords at night practices.
Heres some pics in the mean time

Re: Glowing katana of the night
Why would you need a glowing sword?
I don't see a purpose. Plasti Dip makes sense but glow paint?

Re: Glowing katana of the night
Well
A. I have an unhealthy obsession with all things glow in the dark,
But more importantly B. If you have a sword thats cover glows in the dark bright enough and long enough to be seen in the dark (actual night, not like dark with lights nearby) well enough to fight against, suddenly anyone can fight in any lighting condition and not have to worry about not being able to see their and their opponents weapons. Didn't you ever fight with some of those $20 lightsabers (the old, non-suck ones) from walmart before? Fighting in the dark with illuminated weapons is awesome!
The only catch is people who use glow weapons (if this fabric is good enough), will need a halogen lamp to charge them.

Re: Glowing katana of the night
But night fights are, 99% of the time, in an area that is lit up even just a little bit such as near a bonfire, in a bamboo torch ring or on the main field provided light can reach it (It does in Monty Bell)
Actually fighting in pure darkness is just stupid because you cant get a sense of your footings. Yes its a cool sword but it doesnt fit the concepts of Belegarth. Plus, very rarely did any armies actually fight like that in the feudal era. By nightfall, both armies would retreat to their camps out of honor and wait until the morning because the soldiers needed to rest.

Re: Glowing katana of the night
First off, there where plenty of places at Monty Bell that where dark enough. Secondly, if the fabric glows anything like the paint (the stuff I have isn't the highest grade), perfect darkness is not needed. (at full charge the paint glows in the shade in the middle of the day). Nextly, who said anything about having to do it at events?
Fighting in darkness is only stupid if you suck at moving around at night. I've ran full speed on new moon nights on uneven ground during lazer tag before, and I'm not all that coordinated. If I can do that, I'm pretty sure most people can stand up on a flat surface in the dark.
Finally, who gives a crap if armies didn't fight at night? Back in the day me and my friends used to fight with those plastic lights sabers at night and it was awesome. Now that where older, plastic is to weak and hits to hard to be usable anymore. Bele weapons on the other hand are perfect. It's not like I'm trying to change belegarth or something, just letting people know if this will work for those who are interested.

Re: Glowing katana of the night
Either way it's stupid and useless and you will be made fun of just as bad as these guys.
Re: Glowing katana of the night
I posted a thread about it on the national boards a while back and it got very positive responses: http://board.belegarth.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=30166&hilit=glow+in+the+dark

Re: Glowing katana of the night
First off, Telling him his ideas are stupid is very rude, second, wasn't it you ikeno that told me that we will be made fun of because of what sport we are in. so what i am getting out of this is that some people are acting childish and being rude to others that are wanting to try new things.
leinad if others are willing to try it then so am i, fighting in the dark, maybe not because you still got to worry about head shots and other incidents, it depends on how bright it shines. It will also help with locating weapons in the dark, we have lost weapons in the past.

Re: Glowing katana of the night
Thanks for the support guys. Ikeno's responce to this was more negative than what (I would consider) reasonable, but he is still very much entitled to have his own opinion. I would like to think that we can all be honest with each other, even if it involves some toes getting stepped on. (and admittedly, the idea is pretty dorky; I was surprised that I didn't get any negative responses on the national boards).
Concerning all of us trying it though, its worth pointing out that the fabric is very expensive (like $40 a YRD or something!). The practicality of this idea is riding on if just strips of the fabric alone sewed onto a normal cover would be enough or not.
I did come up with an idea last night for how to safely build watch-battery powered LED lights into crossgaurds, but that might be to dorky even for me XD

Re: Glowing katana of the night
Sorry, for it sounding dickish. But, I just think things like this or, furry larpers is pretty silly and unnecessary.
Re: Glowing katana of the night
Its cool leinad, i agree every one is entitled to their own opinion, even if others don't like it, but we have to be reasonable when it comes to those opinions, you can be generous while stepping on toes if y'all know what i mean. Ikeno, i wasn't trying to sound like an asshole but i was just getting a point across that you can tell people what you think about something and not sound dickish.
